Judge Approves FTC's Largest Ever Fine, To Be Paid By Google

Nine months on from the Wall Street Journal spotting a massive Google privacy issue—namely, that it was circumventing cookie privacy settings in Safari—the search giant's fate is now sealed. A judge has approved the FTC's largest ever fine, in the process rejecting appeals from a consumer-rights group that the sum should be higher, which means Google is set to pony up a cool $22.5 million. AP PHOTOS: Myanmar ready for historic Obama visit

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? President Barack Obama's historic visit to Myanmar on Monday is meant to show America's support for the country's transition to democracy.

The White House has cautioned that Obama's trip to the former pariah state should not be viewed as a "victory celebration" but as an opportunity to press for urgent action still needed in Myanmar. Notably, freeing political prisoners and ending ethnic tension in remote areas.

Myanmar was under military rule for a half-century until last year when a nominally civilian government took office and stunned the world with a rapid rush toward reforms.

One of its early moves was to release famed Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest, and allow her to campaign for parliament. She now leads a small minority in a chamber filled with former military men.

Suu Kyi's enormous popularity stems in part from her father, independence hero Gen. Aung San, who was assassinated in 1948.

Obama's roughly six-hour visit will be confined to Yangon, the main city where the military brutally crushed pro-democracy uprisings in the past, including a 2007 rally led by Buddhist monks and protests in 1988 led by student activists.

During his trip, Obama will meet separately with reformist President Thein Sein and Suu Kyi.

Here, in images, are scenes from Myanmar:

Cookbook Review: Eat, Drink & Be Vegan, by Dreena Burton

Hey everyone. I took a bit of a break from blogging but I really missed it! It was mostly because I kind of ran out of good ideas.?I still don't have lots of new ideas yet, but I did make a couple of recipes from Dreena Burton's Eat Drink & Be Vegan and I really want to share them with you. This is a fabulous cookbook. Although it has been out since 2007, I only got it last year, as a gift. I made a couple of recipes in the last month or so and I truly loved both. So I just had to review it on the blog. First, I made the "Leslie's Bad But Good Bars" (page 199), which are delicious dessert bars with ingredients like pecans, coconut, and oats, and that have an icing-type topping made from chocolate chips, tofu, and nut butter. I mean, seriously - these totally hit the spot. I absolutely loved them. I loved having a little bit of them after dinner as a dessert, or as a snack. You need to try these.

Then, one night for dinner I made the "Lemon Garlic Pasta" (p. 130), which I made with gluten-free pasta. It was fantastic. The sauce was super fresh. It was mostly lemon juice, garlic, and a bit of agave, and the dish is topped with roasted pine nuts. I served it with some roasted brussel sprouts and green beans and it was a wonderful light dinner. The lemon mixed with the pine nuts, garlic and pasta was addicting. It made great leftovers, too, which I brought to work with me for lunch!

The other recipes in the cookbook look fantastic. There are a bunch of recipes for different kinds of hummus. I want to try some of them very, very soon. There are lots of main dish recipes like "Sweet & Sour Chipotle Tempeh with Sweet Potatoes" (p. 147) and "Zucchini Chickpea Tomato Curry" (p. 151). ?The desserts all look amazing too, and have the most fun names! Some highlights: "Chocolate Sin-namon Cake" (p. 189), "Lime Sucker Coconut Pie" (p. 200) and "'You Got Peanut Butter in My Chocolate' Cookies" (p. 215). ?I want to try them all!

I'd definitely recommend this cookbook to anybody, vegan or not. The recipes are creative, healthy and easy to follow. What more could you ask for?! Dreena Burton has other cook books out as well: The Everyday Vegan, Vive Le Vegan, and Let Them Eat Vegan. ?You can see her page on Amazon?here.?She also has a great blog called Plant Powered Kitchen?which I just love. She has great recipes on there and updates often (more than I do!)?Definitely check it out.

One last thing - sorry about using pictures that are not my own. I took pictures of the recipes I made but the photos just didn't come out well at all since the lighting was bad (fall and winter are not good times of year for food bloggers!) I couldn't make the pictures what I wanted them to be, so I borrowed from the internet instead. Not my first choice but I didn't want it to stop me from posting this review!

Have a great weekend, everyone! It's good to be back!

KnightNews.com ? City Fish Orlando Restaurant Review

Entertainment, Food, REVIEW ? By Danielle Clifton on November 17, 2012 at 1:50 pm Tweet

Located near downtown Orlando on Central Boulevard, City Fish is a restaurant that prides itself in serving fresh seafood and seasonal beers. They offer different specials on each,
depending on the day of the week. Upon walking through the doors, I could not help but notice the unusual fusion of rustic and urban pier decor. Black and white photos which appeared to be from many, many decades ago adorned the walls. The photos were counterbalanced by columns in the restaurant with mimic graffiti all over them. Also decking the walls were large flat-screen TVs playing sporting events airing that evening.

My friends and I were seated rather quickly. However, we had plenty of time to select our drinks because there was a considerable time lapse before our waitress made an appearance to take our drink orders. On the table they had a small menu and it displayed a few specialty drinks including the ?Marshmallow Sparkler? (made of marshmallow vodka, cranberry juice, and champagne) and the ?Eola Swamp Water? (consisting of strawberry infused tequila, blue curacao, sour mix and soda water).

Once the waitress appeared again to take our drink order, I opted for a pumpkin ale, after all, City Fish did boast on the website about the seasonal beer. You can imagine my disappointment, then, when the waitress informed me that they were out of pumpkin beer.

I then chose the waitress?s suggestion of the Oberon Ale. It was a decent beer with an interesting and slight citrusy flavor.

After another lengthy absence of our waitress, she made another cameo to take our order. I went with an appetizer of jalapeno hush puppies and the cheeseburger for my entree. One of my comrades ordered oysters. She wanted to split the type of oysters and was eager to try them since she saw the fluorescent ?Oyster Bar? sign taunting passerby?s in the window of the restaurant.

However, the restaurant was out of two of the three types of oysters offered on the menu that day (blue points and Hog Island oysters). She settled for the type they did have. My other dinner mates ordered an appetizer of the New England Clam Chowder accompanied by entrees of squash spaghetti and shrimp.

I was eager for the appetizers to arrive; the jalapeno hush puppies seemed very promising. I was not let down when they made it to the table. The hush puppies themselves were phenomenal. They were flavorful, but the jalape?o did not overpower the taste. Equally as impressive was the sauce that was served with the hush puppies; it was a key lime herb mayo that transformed the jalape?o hush puppies from good to downright delicious. The New England Clam chowder was notable as well. It was very flavorful and had a enough
potato flavoring so the clammy taste wasn?t too dominate.

Our entrees arrived and I noticed that the burger was missing the lettuce I ordered but it wasn?t a big enough deal to mention to the waitress. However, I was highly disappointed when I actually took a bite of my burger. The chef seemed to have confused ?well-done? with burnt.

The only redeeming quality of this meal was the fries; they were quite tasty and cooked for the correct amount of time.

The squash spaghetti with fish, the recommended dinner special, was delicious. It was served with scalloped potatoes and the whole entree was an unexpected, good combination.

Both the oysters and shrimp were appetizing as well. Both seemed rather fresh and the cocktail sauce complimented them nicely.

Overall, I would recommend all of food ordered with the exception of the burger (unless you have a craving for charcoal). According to them, they were voted Orlando?s best New England Lobster roll. It?s a restaurant worth checking out, but I would suggest going early in the night before they run out of a considerable chunk of their menu.

Small Business Advertising: The 4 Elements of Direct Response ...

There are a lot of businesses out there who are putting a lot of time, money and effort into their advertising and marketing efforts but ending up with nothing to show for it.

Is it that they have a substandard product or service? It's possible - no advertising campaign, no matter how effective can sell something no one wants. However, what is much more likely the case is that these businesses don't know how to create an effective direct response campaign.

What is direct response advertising?

To put it simply, a direct response ad is one which is designed to lead to a sale immediately; while there are other uses for direct response campaigns (such as lead generation), most direct response advertisements are meant to connect with their audience in such a way that they'll want to do business with the advertiser right away.

What does a good direct response ad look like?

Effective direct response advertisements can take on many forms; the common thread running through all good ads of this sort is that they make sales, plain and simple. That is the most important and actually, the only important function of a direct response campaign. If it's driving sales, then it's good, no matter what anyone else thinks.

If you read this and apply what you learn to your own small business advertising, you may be surprised by just how much potential your business actually has. Even if you're already doing well, you could dramatically increase sales (and of course, your profits) by using direct response ads which are well written, targeted towards the right audience and using the right media, you can create the strong emotional response needed to close the deal fast.

Once you understand how to create direct response advertising and use it to its best advantage, it can be one of the most powerful tools in your marketing arsenal. If you're interested in building a customer base and growing your business into the successful venture you've always envisioned, then keep reading - you're about to learn how it's done.

An Introduction to Direct Response Marketing

Not all marketing efforts are intended to make a sale immediately. There are advertisements and other promotional strategies which are designed to build or enhance brand image, or raise and maintain consumer awareness of a given company product or service... But those are methods best used by big businesses...

The kind of advertising and marketing that works best for small business is the kind designed to get an immediate response and generate sales - and that's what we're going to be addressing here.

Direct response marketing may take many forms, from short-form advertising copy (such as print ads, contextual PPC advertising, radio spots, TV commercials and the like) to longer marketing messages like full page, text-heavy ads, advertorials and the Robert Collier-style sales letter.

All are valid, and which medium you use to get your message across depends on what you're selling and who you're trying to sell it to; that much you probably know, if you've spent more than ten minutes in marketing - but when you reach your audience with your message matters just as much as everything else.

The 4 Parts of Effective Advertising

In every ad, you need to accomplish each of the following 4 things:

The Right Message to the Right Market in the Right Media at the Right Time

All four of these factors are important to the success of any direct response marketing campaign - and we'll briefly cover all four below:

  • Message: It doesn't matter how great your product or service is if you can't effectively communicate its advantages over what the competition is offering - you won't get many, if any sales. You need to appeal to people on several levels, especially on an emotional level if you want to spur them to action immediately. We'll cover more about how to craft an attention getting message that closes the deal later.
  • Market: Again, it doesn't matter what your product or service is or how great it may be or even how compelling your message is if you're trying to sell to the wrong audience. In other words, don't try to sell sand in the desert. You should already know who your target market is before you begin trying to craft a direct response message to reach them - and if you don't, it's time to go back to the drawing board and start over with some in-depth market research. If you don't know who you're selling to, you'll never be able to put together an effective direct response message.
  • Media: The media you choose to convey your message to your target audience depends a great deal on the demographics of this group; and again, this is where market research comes into play. Depending on who your target market is, different media channels will be more - or less - effective in reaching them. Some groups will be more receptive to direct mail, others to print advertising and still others to email marketing, banner ads and other online marketing strategies. Just as if you were preparing to give a speech, you have to know your audience in order to create a message and select a media which will allow you to make the greatest possible impact.
  • Moment: It's not just about reaching the right audience with the right message through the right media; you also have to make sure that your message reaches them at the right time. What's the right time, you ask? The answer is: when your target market is ready to buy, not when you're ready to sell to them. You're always ready to sell, at least if you're in the least bit suited for business - but you need to remember that not every person out there is ready to make a purchase, even if they're decidedly part of your target market.
There are a few ways of being there when your prospect is ready to buy. You can keep in touch with prospective and current customers via a series of email messages using autoresponder software. Or, if your target market is more likely to respond to offline methods, then you can make sure that your marketing message reaches them when they're ready to buy by running regular advertisements in the media channels which have the greatest market penetration in this demographic - or by using lead generation advertising.

And remember that you can send a series of snail mail letters almost as easily as you can send a series of emails.

Making sure that your message reaches the right people; people who are ready and willing to do business with you right now, involves a combination of all 4 factors; message, market, media and moment. All are important parts of a small business advertising direct response campaign that genuinely produces results and provides you with a good return on investment.

Cooking with Kids: Turkey Butter : Ideas for Women Home and ...

Before you start saying ?oh gross? let me tell you that is not what you think. I recently came across butter in the shape of a turkey. I mean an actual 3D turkey and my mother had to have it. That got me thinking and I though this would be a great sort of project for Cooking with Kids.

Unless you or your children are really artistic than a 3D turkey free handed will not be an easy task but if you think you can do it, go for it. I found that using molds work the best. For children the plain old basic cookie cutters or even candy molds are perfect. If you can find the candy molds that are really small then you can do several. There are a few 3D cake molds but you need to find a small size for it to work.

Tub butter does not hold it?s shape as well as stick butter does. Stick butter just seems to hold up better because it is firmer while tub butter is easier to mold. Creating your masterpiece is very easy; have your children select a mold they like and then place the mold onto wax paper. Next push the butter into the mold making sure to?completely?fill the mold. Place in the?refrigerator?to set up for about 2 hours. Carefully lift the mold off and you are all set.

Storm survivors struggle with pets' fate

NEW YORK (AP) ? Kate and Warren Sherwood had to think quickly about what to take when Superstorm Sandy's surge flooded their barrier island and caused five houses on their block to burn to the ground. Luckily for their two black cats, Schwartz and Scooter, their pets were a priority.

But the narrow escape wasn't the end of the road for the felines. Their owners took refuge at a hotel that didn't accept cats.

"We sneaked them in and put a 'do not disturb' sign on the door ? pretending we're on our honeymoon," said Warren Sherwood, 56, a systems analyst. "But after three days, they got restless and starting meowing."

The couple ended up having to take them to a shelter set up in a gym near their hometown of Long Beach, N.Y.

Entwined with the human costs of the storm, which killed more than 100 people and caused billions of dollars in damage, is another significant toll ? that of the cherished pets that died or were left behind as families fled for their lives, adding in many cases to feelings of displacement and trauma.

Some find it hard to understand why animals are a key concern in disasters engulfing human lives, but owners feel an attachment and responsibility to their pets, said Niki Dawson, director of disaster services for the Humane Society of the United States.

"There's such a strong bond between people and animals that people will put their lives at risk not to leave a pet behind," Dawson said. "So they stay, even when they're told to evacuate, and that puts first responders going back for them at risk."

Owners have recounted tales of a dog swimming through flooded streets and extra food left behind for a tarantula no one was willing to take in.

In New York City and on Long Island, the ASPCA has rescued more than 300 animals and treated or provided supplies to about 13,000, working with government and private animal welfare agencies, said spokeswoman Emily Schneider.

City shelters took in about 400 animals along with their families in the first days after Sandy, Schneider said. There are now more than 100 in shelters with their owners, and a mobile animal medical clinic is cruising decimated neighborhoods in the Rockaway areas of Queens and on Staten Island.

In New Jersey, the Humane Society deployed dozens of first responders using mobile units and boats to bring in about 60 displaced animals each day on the barrier islands hit by the storm.

Two weeks after Sandy made landfall, followed a week later by a nor'easter, search-and-rescue teams were led by Animal Care & Control of NYC, a city-contracted nonprofit responding to hotline calls about pets in distress. Callers are owners forced to leave animals behind or unable to care for them, or people who see them wandering in hard-hit areas.

A Manhattan shelter takes in animals round the clock, hoping for owners to show up. And social media teams scour the Internet for reports of lost pets, helping reunite them with owners.

Rescuing animals is mandatory under federal law, which requires local and state governments to include plans for pets in emergency procedures. Federal Emergency Management Agency funds go toward the welfare of animals in disaster zones.

New York City's human shelters are required to accept pets, and so are taxis and public transportation.

More than 200 dogs, cats and other pets from a devastated area of Long Island are being sheltered in the gymnasium of a community college, set up by the North Shore Animal League America, the nation's largest no-kill rescue and adoption organization. Many, like the Sherwoods' Schwartz and Scooter, belong to owners in nearby shelters and hotels.

"We're ridiculously stressed out; we're freaked out," Warren Sherwood said. "But I'd do anything in the world for these people who are keeping our cats alive."

Also among the pets in the gym is Emma, a Manchester terrier who swam to safety through flooded streets in Freeport on Long Island, while its owners carried their cats above the water, plus some clothes they grabbed at the last minute.

"We lost our house. It's submerged," said Mark Swing, who fled with his girlfriend as the tides rose. "All we got out was our four cats and the dog, except for a few changes of clothes."

The 8-year-old terrier was "a little tired, but fine," said Swing, 48, a contractor who was in a Red Cross shelter.

Cats and dogs weren't the only pets rescued from the storms.

"We're finding chinchillas, guinea pigs, rabbits, reptiles, birds," Dawson said.

There are stories of pets whose fates remain unknown, like gerbils and a tarantula left behind by a teenage boy whose Staten Island home has been deemed uninhabitable.

His aunt in Brooklyn agreed to take in the gerbils, but no one wanted the hairy tarantula. The teen left it behind with lots of food ? in hopes the spider could be retrieved later.

Transport trailers distributed pet food and supplies like crates, leashes and litter from a warehouse in Queens set up days before Sandy descended, said the Humane Society's Schneider. Tons of food donated by manufacturers is being trucked in.

Celebrity chef Rachael Ray is donating $500,000 to the ASPCA to help pets and families struggling to rebound from Sandy. She said her pet food brand, Nutrish, is also shipping 4 tons of wet and dry dog food for Sandy animals, and her Yum-o organization is donating $100,000 to City Harvest and the Food Bank for New York City.

The ASPCA will use the money to lease a building to board Sandy animals until their owners can take care of them.

It will likely be months before any estimates are available as to how many pets might have died or were lost during New York's double storms. And like their owners, many animals that survived won't go home anytime soon.

Dawson said she has seen people stuck in shelters, wearing donated clothing, with no idea when they'll go home. But when they turn to their dog or cat, "their faces light up."

And that, she says, is why animals matter amid a human disaster.

Holy relic from Rome takes trip to city church

SACRED ARTEFACT: Year 7 students Jordan Prenner and Michael Aiavao get a close look at the holy relic of St Francis Xavier. Rob Williams

ST FRANCIS Xavier Catholic Church in Goodna has housed a holy relic on a rare tour away from its historic home.

The relic, the right forearm of St Francis Xavier, began its tour of Australia in Sydney on September 16 and will return to Sydney before its return to Rome on December 4.

It arrived in Goodna at 2pm yesterday and is scheduled to leave at 9am today.

The significance of the relic is it is the arm with which St Francis Xavier baptised and blessed people and held the hands of the sick and dying.

Yesterday, at the church named in his honour, schoolchildren, teachers and parents gazed at the relic in wonder and awe.

They filed up to the front of the church in pairs to look at the relic.

It is contained in a sealed plexiglass box surrounded by Australian timber.

Father Richard Shortall, who is travelling with the relic, said that after St Francis Xavier died on an island off the south coast of China, the Jesuits on Malacca decided to retrieve his body.

In 1614, Fr Shortall said, the Jesuits in Rome decided they wanted part of his body to go on display.

"It is a huge joy to bring the relic to a church named after St Francis Xavier," Fr Shortall said.

George Hartnett Funerals arranged transport during the relic's visit to the Archdiocese of Brisbane.

Saintly legacy

  • St Francis Xavier (1506-1552) was co-founder of the Jesuit Order and patron saint of Australia until 1976 when Australia ceased to be categorised as a mission country.
  • His statue is in many Catholic churches and there are two cathedrals named after him.
  • It is very rare for the relic of St Francis Xavier to leave Rome.

Family's Questions About Alzheimer's Patients Can Put Nurses in a ...

HealthDay News
by -- Robert Preidt
Updated: Nov 13th 2012

new article illustration

TUESDAY, Nov. 13 (HealthDay News) -- Many nurses and other health workers at Alzheimer's care facilities feel unprepared to tell patients' family members the truth about their loved one's condition, a new study finds.

They often have to struggle with the choice of being positive but dishonest, or candid but disheartening, the researchers said.

The study included 15 registered nurses, 13 care assistants or nurse aides, and four licensed practical nurses who worked at skilled nursing or assisted-living facilities in four states.

Another communication dilemma faced by the workers was what to say to relatives who did not have power of attorney but asked for details about a patient's condition despite health information privacy laws.

Many of the workers said family members often sought advice from them, while the workers believed their professional role was to offer the family options for care, according to the findings published online Nov. 13 in the Journal of Applied Communication Research.

The findings suggest "that nurses and care assistants working with Alzheimer's patients and their families face unique communication challenges in managing families' uncertainty that are not adequately addressed in the training they receive," study author Anne Stone, an assistant professor in the communication department at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., said in a journal news release.

"I think that discussing the experience of family uncertainty, and how to manage it, in training would help nursing staff," she suggested.

The study participants revealed several strategies they used to help them deal with the challenges of communicating with patients' families:

  • Health workers and families should develop a common set of care expectations.
  • Caregiving should be more visible. For example, a nurse might tell family members what care their loved one recently received, or a care assistant might perform some care tasks, such as trimming a patient's fingernails, in the family's presence.
  • Emphasize to relatives that coming to see the patient is also positive for the visitor.

Violence flares in Golan even as Syria's opposition seeks recognition

DOHA/CAIRO (Reuters) - Syria's newly named opposition leader, a soft-spoken cleric backed by Washington and the Gulf Arab states, launched his quest on Monday for international recognition of a government-in-waiting to topple President Bashar al-Assad.

Mouaz Alkhatib, a former imam of a Damascus mosque, flew to Cairo to seek the Arab League's blessing for a new assembly, the day after he was unanimously elected to lead it. He made a concerted effort to address the sectarian and ethnic acrimony underlying 20 months of civil war that has killed 38,000 people.

"We demand freedom for every Sunni, Alawi, Ismaili, Christian, Druze, Assyrian ... and rights for all parts of the harmonious Syrian people," he said, calling on Syrian soldiers to desert and all sects to unite.

His new Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces received the endorsement of the six Sunni Muslim-ruled kingdoms of the Gulf Cooperation Council as the "legitimate representative of the Syrian people".

Washington also promised to back the new body "as it charts a course toward the end of Assad's bloody rule and the start of the peaceful, just, democratic future".

In signs of the serious danger of the 20-month conflict spreading across the region, Monday saw a surge of violence at two frontiers. Israel fired shells from across the line separating Syria from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, while Syrian warplanes bombed a rebel-held town on the Turkish border.

Rebels and opposition politicians formed Alkhatib's new opposition coalition after days of wrangling in Qatar under intense U.S. and Qatari pressure.

Backers hope the new body will give rebels inside Syria more clout and reassure religious and ethnic minorities, after a Syrian National Council (SNC) made up mainly of exiled Islamists proved ineffective as the main opposition voice.

Western and Arab opponents of Assad want the coalition to attract support from minority sects who had been alienated from the opposition by the prominence of well-organised Sunnis from the Muslim Brotherhood. They also hope to rein in Islamist fighters, some of whom they believe are linked to al Qaeda.

"Alkhatib is a dynamic, progressive Islamist, popular in Damascus and the rest of Syria," said Mazen Adi, a prominent Syrian human rights defender who worked with Alkhatib before the revolt. "He is not a trigger-happy Jihadist, and he can play a role in containing the extremist groups."

ARAB LEAGUE BACKING SOUGHT

Alkhatib met Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby before the gathering of Arab foreign ministers in Cairo. European foreign ministers are due to join them on Tuesday.

"The most important thing that could come out from (Monday's) meeting is a form of recognition for the new Syrian council alliance that was established in Doha," said one Arab diplomat, speaking before the talks on condition of anonymity.

A League official said any recognition of the opposition would probably avoid describing it as the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people, because some Arab states were still reluctant to jettison Assad altogether.

"There are still Arab states like Iraq and Lebanon that are not fully supportive of the Syrian revolt," the official said, also on condition he not be identified.

Alkhatib, in his early 50s, was jailed several times for criticizing Assad before fleeing into exile this year. He has long promoted a liberal Islam tolerant of Syria's Christian, Alawite and other minorities.

Hassan Hassan, a Syrian commentator based in the United Arab Emirates, said Alkhatib, as an independent cleric, would be a counterweight to growing influence of the Muslim Brotherhood.

"He's been active for a long time, campaigning against the idea of retribution and extremism. He talks about liberty and freedom for the masses. So he is perceived as a credible figure," Hassan said.

Russia, which with China has foiled U.N. action on Syria and views Assad's opponents as pawns of the West, urged the new body to negotiate and to reject outside meddling.

Asked if China recognized the new coalition, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei called on all parties to initiate "a political transition process guided by the Syrian people".

BORDER BOMBING

The escalation of violence over 20 months in a country allied to Iran and bordering Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, has raised the prospect of wider regional war.

Israeli tanks fired shells into Syria and scored "direct hits" in response to a Syrian mortar round that struck the Golan Heights, the Israeli military said.

It was the second time in two days that Israel has responded to what it said was errant Syrian fire. On Sunday the military said it had a fired a "warning shot" across the disengagement line, while on Monday it said it had fired back at "the source".

Syria and Israel have not fought over the Golan since the 1973 Middle East conflict, but are still formally at war. Israel captured the Golan from Syria in 1967 and later annexed it in a move not recognized internationally.

At the northern end of Syria, government jets and helicopters attacked the rebel-held town of Ras al-Ain, with some bombs landing just meters (yards) from the Turkish border, sending scores of civilians fleeing into Turkey.

A Reuters reporter on the border near the town, which fell to the rebels on Thursday, said one warplane flew right along the frontier and appeared to stray across it at one point, as bombs sent up plumes of black smoke.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a pro-opposition group that tracks the violence from Britain, said 12 people, including seven Islamist militants, had been killed in strikes on Ras al-Ain. Another opposition group put the toll at 16.

The Observatory said 140 people were killed in Syria on Sunday. More than 38,000 people have died since March last year.

Turkey, whose border security worries were heightened by a sudden influx of 9,000 refugees within 24 hours last week, has consulted its NATO allies about possibly deploying Patriot surface-to-air missiles to deter Syria's air force.

It remains to be seen whether the Coalition can succeed where the exiled SNC failed in overcoming mutual suspicion and in-fighting that weakened the opposition.

"This is a significant step forward, because they finally seem to be forging a more broadly-based platform that includes the SNC but without the SNC taking the lion's share," said Salman Shaikh, director of the Doha Brookings Center think tank.

U.S. to overtake Saudi as top oil producer: IEA

LONDON (Reuters) - The United States will overtake Saudi Arabia and Russia as the world's top oil producer by 2017, the West's energy agency said on Monday, predicting Washington will come very close to achieving a previously unthinkable energy self-sufficiency.

The forecasts by the International Energy Agency (IEA), which advises large industrialized nations on energy policy, were in sharp contrast to previous IEA reports, which saw Saudi Arabia remaining the top producer until 2035.

"Energy developments in the United States are profound and their effect will be felt well beyond North America - and the energy sector," the IEA said in its annual long-term report, giving one of the most optimistic forecasts for U.S. energy production growth to date.

"The recent rebound in U.S. oil and gas production, driven by upstream technologies that are unlocking light tight oil and shale gas resources, is spurring economic activity - with less expensive gas and electricity prices giving industry a competitive edge," it added.

The IEA said it saw a continued fall in U.S. oil imports with North America becoming a net oil exporter by around 2030 and the United States becoming almost self-sufficient in energy by 2035.

"The United States, which currently imports around 20 percent of its total energy needs, becomes all but self-sufficient in net terms - a dramatic reversal of the trend seen in most other energy importing countries," it said.

IEA Chief Economist Fatih Birol told a news conference in London he believed the United States would overtake Russia as the biggest gas producer by a significant margin by 2015. By 2017, it would become the world's largest oil producer, he said.

The United States will rely more on natural gas than either oil or coal by 2035 as cheap domestic supply boosts demand among industry and power generators, the IEA said.

LIMITED KNOWLEDGE

Birol said he realized how optimistic the IEA forecasts were given that the shale oil boom was a relatively new phenomenon.

"Light, tight oil resources are poorly known ... If no new resources are discovered (after 2020) and plus, if the prices are not as high as today, then we may see Saudi Arabia coming back and being the first producer again," he said.

The IEA said it saw U.S. oil production rising to 10 million barrels per day (bpd) by 2015 and 11.1 million bpd in 2020 before slipping to 9.2 million bpd by 2035.

Saudi Arabian oil output would be 10.9 million bpd by 2015, the IEA said, 10.6 million bpd in 2020 but would rise to 12.3 million bpd by 2035.

That would see the world relying increasingly on OPEC after 2020 as, in addition to increases from Saudi Arabia, Iraq will account for 45 percent of the growth in global oil production to 2035 and become the second-largest exporter, overtaking Russia.

OPEC's share of world oil production will rise to 48 percent from 42 percent now.

Russian oil output, which over the past decade has been steadily above Saudi Arabia, is predicted to stay flat at over 10 million bpd until 2020, when it will start to decline to reach just above 9 million bpd by 2035.

"Russia, which remains the largest individual energy exporter throughout the period, sees its revenues from oil, natural gas and coal exports rise from $380 billion in 2011 to $410 billion in 2035," the IEA said.

The U.S. oil boom would accelerate a switch in the direction of international oil trade, the IEA said, predicting that by 2035 almost 90 percent of oil from the Middle East would be drawn to Asia.

ENERGY DEMAND GROWS BY THIRD

The report assumes a huge expansion in the Chinese economy, which it saw overtaking the United States in purchasing power parity soon after 2015 and by 2020 using market exchange rates. Chinese real gross domestic product is expected to increase by 5.7 percent annually between 2011 and 2035.

A rise of 1.8 billion in the world's population to 8.6 billion would lead to a spike in global oil demand by more than a 10th to over 99 million bpd by 2035, keeping pressure on oil prices, the IEA said.

The agency's central "New Policies" scenario, which assumes a range of measures are taken to curb oil consumption in Europe, the United States, China and elsewhere, sees the average import cost of oil rise to just over $215 per barrel by 2035 in nominal terms, or $125 in 2011 terms.

If fewer steps are taken to promote renewable energy and curb carbon dioxide emissions, oil was likely to exceed $250 per barrel in nominal terms by 2035 and reach $145 in real terms -- almost level with the record highs seen four years ago.

The share of coal in primary energy demand will fall only slightly by 2035.

Fossil fuels in general will remain dominant in the global energy mix, supported by subsidies that, in 2011, jumped by almost 30 percent to $523 billion, due mainly to increases in the Middle East and North Africa.

S&P, Fitch face landmark trial over Italy downgrades

TRANI, Italy (Reuters) - Italian prosecutors are seeking trial for seven current and former employees at rating agencies Standard & Poor's and Fitch over their downgrades of Italy, paving the way for the first European court case over sovereign rating cuts.

Prosecutors in the southern town of Trani, launching a case which bigger Italian courts have refused to back, probed five analysts from S&P and two from Fitch for alleged market manipulation and abuse of privileged information.

S&P on Monday rejected all the claims made by the prosecutors and an Italian judge will have the ultimate say on whether the trial should go ahead.

The magistrates dropped allegations against peer agency Moody's, saying there was no evidence of "intention to manipulate markets" during the raft of rating cuts that have hit Italy since 2011.

If the Italian case goes to trial it may reshape the long-running debate over liability of rating agencies for their credit opinions at a time of great global economic uncertainty.

Agencies have increasingly come under fire for not predicting the subprime mortgage debt crisis of 2008-2009. Last week an Australian court ruled that S&P misled investors by giving top notch ratings to risky derivatives in the run-up to the crisis.

"The agencies for which we seek trial did not respect the rules of transparency, loyalty and the parameters of quality and efficiency set by European regulators," Trani chief prosecutor Carlo Maria Capristo told a news conference.

Prosecutors allege that the reports on debt-laden Italy and its banking system by S&P and Fitch were inaccurate and in at least one case leaked during market hours, provoking steep losses on Italy's stock and bond markets.

"These claims are entirely baseless and without any merit as our role is to publish independent opinions about creditworthiness according to our public and transparent methodologies, which we apply consistently around the world," S&P said in an emailed statement on Monday.

There was no immediate comment from Fitch.

CRITICISM

Governments across Europe have come under assault from markets for running up big debts which they had trouble servicing. In response, Italy and others have embarked on austerity programs which have proved deeply unpopular.

However, European policymakers have complained the ratings agencies were too quick to downgrade EU states despite bailouts and the painful reforms.

In the United States, authorities have criticised New York-based S&P for cutting the U.S. cherished AAA rating last August.

Italian prosecutors said on Monday U.S. authorities had formally asked them for information over the case.

The downgrades to Italy's ratings have provoked great anger amongst the country's politicians and business leaders, with some such as former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi alleging a political agenda behind the moves.

However current premier Mario Monti, a technocrat who has won international plaudits for his economic reform drive, has been less strident in his criticism.

The Italian case started last year after prosecutors in Trani received a legal complaint from two consumer rights groups previously turned down by magistrates in Milan and Rome.

The decision by Trani to start a high-profile case dismissed by bigger courts prompted questions in Italy over whether the tenacious magistrates were seeking glory other than truth.

"Our answer is in our acts. Our work is the result of a careful analysis of documents, not of a political valuation," Capristo said.

"Critics have compared us to a little town in Oklahoma, but we respond with facts and by applying the law," he said.

A medical technology company developing real-time lesion visualization technology

This medical innovation, based on collaborative research by Drs. Marco Mercader, M.D., a cardiologist; Matthew Kay, D.Sc., a biomedical engineer; and Narine Sarvazyan, Ph.D., a physiologist, at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) and the GW School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), has immediate groundbreaking potential in the treatment of Atrial Fibrillation (AF), the most common irregular heartbeat affliction in the U.S.

BOSTON/WASHINGTON The George Washington University (GW) and Allied Minds, Inc., a premier U.S. investment firm, are pleased to announce the formation of LuxCath LLC, a medical technology company that is developing real-time lesion visualization technology based on breakthrough research from the university.

LuxCath's technology for directly visualizing tissue and lesions in real time has initial application in the treatment of Atrial Fibrillation (AF). AF is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat, in the U.S., affecting more than 2 million people, or about 1 in every 150 individuals. The relatively new but minimally invasive procedure used to restore the heartbeat to a normal pace, known as Radio Frequency Catheter Ablation (RFCA), optimally requires a real-time, lesion-identifying, direct visualization tool in order to be performed consistently, effectively, quickly and safely.

"We formed LuxCath to ensure that electrophysiologists are treating the right parts of the heart in atrial fibrillation patients quickly and effectively," said Dr. Omar Amirana, M.D., Managing Director for Life Sciences at Boston-based Allied Minds. "LuxCath's technology should significantly improve procedural outcomes for patients, speed up procedures, as well as minimize costly and burdensome follow-up re-treatments."

This medical innovation is based on collaborative research by Drs. Marco Mercader, M.D., a cardiologist at the GW Medical Faculty Associates (MFA) and SMHS professor; Matthew Kay, D.Sc., a biomedical engineer at the GW SEAS ; and Narine Sarvazyan, Ph.D., a physiologist, at the GW SMHS. This collaboration represents GW's growing interest in investing in research programs that may become the basis of corporate partnerships like this one with Allied Minds.

"Such partnerships are crucial to bring the benefits of collaborative research and the development of innovative technologies to those who need them; and to provide an opportunity to fully develop and provide products in the commercial market," said University Vice President for Research Leo Chalupa.

"We were impressed with the collaboration across multiple disciplines and amongst multiple schools at GW in this arena. Bringing new thinking to problem solving and cross-fertilizing ideas to optimize and apply an innovative technology to a real-world problem was particularly compelling to us. We commend GW's efforts here," commented Dr. Amirana.

Drs. Mercader, Kay and Sarvazyan have focused their research for many years on AF because effectively treating the condition is one of the biggest problems hospitals face, not just in the U.S., but around the world.

To date, monitoring tissue injury in real time remains a major limitation of current ablation approaches," said Dr. Mercader. "Detection of viability gaps between the lesions and closure of these gaps during a single radio frequency ablation would increase both the safety and efficacy of therapy. We are very excited to develop products that will significantly enhance the lives of patients."

Keeping It Real About Online Dating ? The People Supermarket ...

where's the instant relationship aisle?

Between readers, friends, and family, I know a lot of people who are using dating sites, and aside from the whole coming up against the Cough Up A Shag Or The Dates That Weren?t Going To Materialise Anyway WIll Dry Up issue, it can be hard to deal with what feels like ?rejection? or ?passing rejection? and feeling ?unattractive? as well as the frustration of not meeting the type of people you feel that you ?should? meet.

One reader for instance, felt a bit bruised by the realisation that her profile had been looked at over ten thousand times since she?d been on the site. Now I don?t think she expected all ten thousand to get in touch, but she was disappointed that ?only? just over a hundred had. I?ve also heard a lot of stories of people finding people who match their ?requirements? who they cannot forge a relationship with.

I?ve said it before and I?ll say it again: Online dating isn?t for the faint hearted or those without a reasonable level of self-esteem, some Columbo skills and their feet firmly in reality. If you use online dating to collect attention to bolster your wavering self-esteem, to avoid ?rejection rejection? in the real world because you feel ?safer? at home, and find it easy to feel connected to someone by seeing a few things that you like, you?ll get your virtual tippy tapping fingers burned.

I think of dating sites like people supermarkets.

From behind a screen or mobile device, you can browse the aisles and filter by your whims and shopping list of requirements. The computer says that you can search this way so now it?s as if we seem to think that if the computer says YES, then no matter how convoluted and contradictory some of the things we want may be, or how someone may be good on virtual paper but not in reality, we expect what we want and expect to materialise.

People browse dating sites to pass time, to look for their next Fast Forwarding opportunity (it could be hours, a day, several days, weeks, or even months) and yes to look for a relationship. Let me assure you ? I?ve read and heard enough horror stories to know that while the profile provides you with some information, you won?t know what someone wants and who they are until you?ve experienced them over time. There?s no point going ?But they said??. It?s like when you have a person?s resume / CV ? you?ve got to do the due diligence. You?re not going to give a job based on CV alone!

People unfold. Yes, even virtual ones.

The likelihood is that if someone?s skimming through lots of profiles, they?ll likely click when something catches their eye. They might click through on the profile, see something that does or doesn?t resonate and either respond or move on. The key is not to read any great meaning into a click or a wink or a message. It?s an expression of potential interest just like when someone asks for your number, it?s not a contract or an automatic precursor to love.

In ?olden times?, you had to leave your house, or be set up, look in the back of the newspaper/magazine or use a dating agency. Now, if you?re married and enjoy dogging (getting laid in car parks I?m told) and want to meet someone behind your spouses back, you can locate someone with a few clicks. Or you can just pretend to be single? If you want to exaggerate who you are, you?re free to do as you like. If you want to showboat like there?s a relationship on offer and keep it to emails, sexts, texts and a bit of Skyping, you can find someone who is used to crumbs of attention and you can have them there as your backup ?relationship? (albeit a fantasy one) while you have other relationships.

On dating sites, there?s no ?judgment? from your family and peers about being superficial, or selecting a financial bracket, or choosing them because they?re holding a cat while two kids hover nearby. You can make a thousand assumptions about the person before you?ve even met. If they look how you want them to look and you?re sold on words and imagery, you may be excited and full of hope based on reading a profile.

Some people will roam the ?aisles?, browsing aimlessly and possibly reaching out and collecting attention aimlessly. Let?s be real, whether it?s on or offline, a lot of people 1) don?t know what they want or 2) think that they do but then realise later that they want different or that they don?t know or 3) overestimate their capacity for a relationship or 4) just don?t know how to be ?alone?.

Some will head straight to a particular aisle and narrow down their search and then read a few profiles and possibly select one or several to reach out to, possibly to increase their ?hit rate?. Really, their reasons could be anything which is why there?s no point trying to get in their mind. I looked at several tomato ketchups recently. I chose an organic glass bottled one with a nice label. There?s nothing to say that it was going to taste great or that in those few moments that I made a judgment about any of the others. I just chose a ketchup based on my tastes at that moment.

Really, someone not clicking on your profile or reaching out isn?t a ?judgment? of you. If they?ve got to narrow their options, where is the judgment in that? It doesn?t mean that you?re ?unattractive?. It?s not the dating version of X-Factor.

You have to treat online dating the way that any company or brand with an email newsletter list has to. They?re not going to send an email newsletter and expect every single person to open it, read, click and respond. In fact, the industry rate is 1-2%. Obviously there are things that can be done to optimise these ?campaigns? and increase interaction but with regards to online dating, people?s responses to imagery, words, and filters can be a tad unpredictable. You can ensure that you have a well written profile with a good (truthful but flattering) picture that you?re specific in what you?re looking for and that you in turn focus your search on people who have similar profiles and are values focused, but until you meet in reality, you have to reserve judgement and reign in your libido and imagination. Really.

People can use words and photographs to portray themselves and their lives in any way that they like. We?ve been subjected to this with advertising for many years so we really shouldn?t be that surprised that it happens on dating sites. They?re there to ?showcase? ?single? (depending on what type of site it is) humans and facilitate ?connections? and ?introductions? but now that sites are so prolific and the barrier to entry is so low, you have to expect that it will take time and reality.

It doesn?t matter whether it?s on or offline, you still have to take your time and go through the discovery phase.

However the whole virtual aspect means that you have to do more ?balancing? of the imagination books because your job is to reconcile preconceptions based on initial virtual interactions with your actual experience of that person. If there?s too much imagination and words and not enough human contact, you may become invested in something and someone that doesn?t exist.

Basically you have to keep it real about getting virtual and accept that if you?re going to use dating sites, you?ll have to ?work through? a lot more people and dates as well as accepting that the superficial element, the browsing etc come with the territory. You have to accept that it will take time and that it?s not an instant result. You probably need to accept that you?ll come across someone that misrepresents themselves and you just have to flush hard when you recognise it. Take it as a given that you?ll meet people sniffing around for sex. If you struggle with disappointment and rejection, steer clear. You also have to keep assumptions to an absolute minimum other than if they act shady and have contradictory information or behaviour, FLUSH. Hard. Don?t forget: People still meet face-to-face.

Your thoughts?

PS Does anyone else find it fascinating that so many people use the filters yet many don?t use it for distance?
