Top-seeded Spartans fall to Cardinals 57-44

PHOENIX (AP) ? Michigan State's guards struggled with Louisville's pressure and the big men had a hard time getting shots to fall.

Everyone had trouble with Gorgui Dieng.

Dieng blocked seven shots and top-seeded Michigan State had more turnovers than field goals in a 57-44 loss to Louisville in the West Regional Thursday night.

"We just missed some shots that we have hit (in the past)," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. "But I also thought they disrupted us a little bit and we just didn't have enough guys that could play well."

Michigan State (29-8) started slow and never got going against Louisville's amoebic defense.

The Spartans got shots they wanted and usually make, but couldn't get many to fall against Dieng or anyone else, shooting 28 percent while being outscored 20-14 inside by the leaner Cardinals.

Green had 13 points and 16 rebounds in his final game for Michigan State, which had 16 turnovers and 15 field goals. Brandon Wood added 14 points for the Spartans, who were outscored 17-4 off the bench.

"He was very disruptive," Michigan State's Draymond Green said. "We're not going to back down from anyone. We took it at him. He pulled off some great blocked shots. That's what he does. That's his strength."

The Cardinals (29-9) relied on 3-point shooting in the first half and moved inside in the second to befuddle the Spartans.

Their defense gave Michigan State fits all night.

Instead of trapping like it normally does, Louisville played a bait-and-switch game with the Spartans and Green, their multitalented forward. The idea was to jump out on screens and to make the Spartans work on every possession and, hopefully, wear them out.

It worked, in large part because Dieng was in the back to clean things up.

Tent-pole thin when he arrived at Louisville, the Senegalese center worked hard on his body and his game, developing into the one player the Cardinals had to have on the floor. When he got in foul trouble, Louisville labored, so one of the key parts of coach Rick Pitino's game plan was to make sure the Cardinals protected him.

They did and he protected the rim in return, getting five of his blocked shots in the second half to prevent Michigan State from mounting any kind of rally. The Cardinals move on to the West final Saturday against the winner between Marquette and Florida.

"When we came here, we know (what) we're going to face," said Dieng, who also had five points, nine rebounds and three steals while matching the school record for blocked shots in an NCAA tournament game. "We knew we were going to come to a war. We need to be tougher than them to win this game."

This sweet matchup of top programs featured two of college basketball's best short-preparation coaches.

Pitino has used his speed-the-opponent-up system to reach the Final Four five times, becoming the first coach to lead three different schools to the national semifinals. Once past the NCAA tournament's first week, he's had a knack for guiding his team further along the bracket, going 10-0 in the regional semifinals.

Izzo has spent his 17 years at Michigan State building teams that can handle the rigors of the Big Ten or switch to greyhound mode when the opponent plays fast. He's been as consistent as any coach in the game, leading the Spartans to the Final Four six times, including the 2000 national title, and 10 trips to the regionals round the past 15 years.

Izzo played the right hand the last time these two basketball brains met, taking the Spartans to the 2009 Final Four after they found a way to break Louisville's pressure.

Pitino had something up his sleeve this time.

With Michigan State bogging the game down, the Cardinals struggled early, missing 12 of their first 13 shots. They snapped out of it by hitting 3s.

Russ Smith hit a pair, Jared Swopshire and Chris Smith each dropped one in and, even Dieng ? 0 for 2 in his career previously ? got one to go in.

Swopshire closed it out with a 3 from the corner to put the Cardinals up 23-18 at halftime. Louisville was 7 of 15 from the arc in the half, but got almost nothing inside, hitting 1 of 15 shots from two-point range.

"Our game plan was to cut off the paint," Izzo said. "I thought we did actually a very good job of that. And yet they hit some 3's."

Louisville shifted gears to open the second half, getting two layups and a dunk to keep its cushion. Swopshire followed with an alley-oop to Siva for the point guard's first points, then stole the inbound pass to set up two free throws by Russ Smith that put the Cardinals up 35-25.

Michigan State managed a short run to get within four, but Louisville used its pressure to get a couple of steals and baskets to go up 43-32. Dieng followed with a couple more swats ? one on Keith Appling that sailed into the stands ? to keep the Spartans at arm's length.

"He played an exceptional game," Pitino said.

Good enough to get Louisville into the regional final for the third time in six years, a trip to New Orleans and the Final Four within its sight.

'Fairly Legal' sneak peek: A conflict of interest with two clients - From ...

"Fairly Legal" returned for its second season last Friday (March 16) and with it brought a lot of changes for Kate Reid and cohorts. The firm is in financial trouble, there's a smarmy new partner to deal with, Justin laid a huge confession on Kate and then her boat blew up. Rough week.

The show is back Friday, March 23 with "Start Me Up" and Zap2it has an exclusive sneak peek clip (above), where Lauren is getting a new client - a fashion designer who wants his former employee to adhere to her non-compete agreement. The only problem is, said former employee is a client of Ben Grogan, the new partner at Reed and Reed. Uh oh.

In other news, Kate is asked by Justin to mediate an agreement between the FBI and a local hospital. We imagine working with him will be just aces for Kate.

"Fairly Legal" airs Friday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on USA. Be sure to tune in to Character Chatter during this week's episode - Virginia Williams (Lauren) will be chatting live with fans!

How to Make Online Video Marketing Work For Your Business ...

We tend to think you could start reading about battleship and easily spend a huge amount of time on this one subject, alone. We are all under various amounts of information overload, and you and others may not slow down enough to think that there is more to the story. The nature of researching anything dictates that you identify and isolate the salient points and investigate each one on their own. You always want the best possible outcomes with something like this, and so you generally know what needs to be done. With this topic, we truly mean it when we say that you can go beyond what any one article will have to say about it.

If you are looking out to create an impact on your website visitors or drive more traffic, you should start using videos on your site as well as in your marketing to get optimum results. In this article we will be looking at how you can get the best out of videos and use them for your benefit.

Step One: Promote Videos With Twitter

Sure, there is a lot to digest regarding snow white in today?s article, and we do always strive to over-deliver.

All you need to do is follow along because we have this plus much more in store.

Of course not absolutely everything will be used today by you, and that is normal and quite typical. That can sometimes be a mistake because on closer observation you will often change your mind. We make a suggestion here and there, and what we are trying to do is spark your own creative thinking. This is truly exciting stuff, and it will get even better later on as you finish the article. We always think that it is always all good, and it just needs to percolate a little bit in your mind. There is no question that Twitter is a powerful tool for Internet marketing, although it is often underestimated. Twitter is a simple yet effective way to get targeted traffic, network with the right people and build your own list. If you use Twitter, post videos and then tweet them you will have increased your exposure greatly and this in turn will increase the profit of your business. Twitter will turn your videos into superpowered marketing tools. One particularly powerful advantage that Twitter offers to a growing business is the potential for any videos that you tweet to go viral. If someone finds a tweet they like, they can retweet it, enabling your video to spread from person to person, exposing you to more people. All this does is prove that your video marketing can reach unprecedented heights when social networking is thrown in the mix.

Record Your Progress

As the internet continues to grow so does the technology that surrounds it. There is a wide variety of tools and software that you can employ to track and analyze your website traffic. You should always take sufficient time and effort to precisely measure the type of impact your video is having on your potential customers and how the videos are performing. Software tools are available to help you easily discover such important statistics as: How long did the video run before it was closed? You can also learn the amount of traffic your site received after prospects viewed the video on Youtube or elsewhere. What was the conversion rate for these visitors? These are the types of things you can find out when you take the time to track your results. The ability to easily track the performance of all of your website marketing efforts is an important key to making the best possible videos to support your campaigns. When you track the performance of your videos on a regular basis you?ll have an accurate picture as to what your target audience is most interested in and then use this information when you create future videos.

Using videos to advertise your company is one of the best, most effective techniques you could use to separate yourself from the crowd. If you still haven?t thought about adding this form of marketing to your list of promotional methods, you might want to give it a fair try. Video sharing websites such as Youtube have gained a lot of ground on the Internet and have become an extremely popular way for people to view videos, both entertaining and informative. Taking everything into account, it is very safe to say that these next several years will prove to be a booming period for online videos and the people who market them. Begin now taking advantage of video marketing on the web and this will give you the leverage that you need to promote your business.

Institute announces ambitious 10-year plan to tackle the most complex questions in brain science with a continued commitment to open data sharing

The Allen Institute for Brain Science announced today that, given its achievements to date, Paul G. Allen has committed an additional $300 million to the Institute to significantly expand its scientific programs. Bringing his total commitment to date to $500 million, Allen has charged the Institute with tackling some of the most fundamental and complex questions in brain science today. The answers to these questions are essential for achieving a complete understanding of how the brain works, what goes wrong in brain-related diseases and disorders, and how best to treat them.

"The accomplishments of the Institute have been truly remarkable," said Paul G. Allen. "With its disciplined, mission-focused approach, the Institute has successfully tackled big-science projects, delivering tangible results that are helping to advance brain research around the world every day. I am excited to expand the scale and scope of the Institute's efforts, and I look forward to seeing what we will accomplish in the future."

Allen's significant new contribution will support the first four years of an ambitious 10-year plan developed by the Allen Institute for Brain Science. The plan calls for a doubling of the Institute's staff to launch three new and complementary scientific initiatives that address critical questions that are central to understanding how the brain works:

  • How does the brain store, encode and process information?
  • What are the cellular building blocks that underlie all brain function, and are often targets of disease?
  • How do those cells develop, and then create the circuits that drive behavior, thought and brain dysfunction?

These three complementary initiatives are designed to yield knowledge of fundamental principles governing brain function, publicly sharable data, and new tools and technologies that will further accelerate progress across the global research community.

"Paul Allen's generosity and bold vision have allowed us to build a unique organization and advance brain research in ways that wouldn't be possible otherwise," said Allan Jones, Ph.D., chief executive officer of the Allen Institute for Brain Science. "This new funding enables us to apply our structured, industrial-scale approach to science to tackle increasingly complex questions about how the brain worksquestions that must be answered if we are to understand and treat autism, Alzheimer's disease, depression, traumatic brain injury and the myriad other brain-related diseases and disorders that affect all of us either directly or indirectly."

Expansion

To support the new initiatives, the Allen Institute will expand significantly, with plans to double its current staff to more than 350 employees over the next four years. Hiring has begun across all three initiatives. These programs require a team of leading minds at all levels and from across different disciplines to cross-talk and pool their expertise, working toward common goals.

The Allen Institute has already begun to assemble a powerhouse of noted scientific leaders who will collaborate closely and drive creative discovery, innovation and productivity to achieve the goals of the new initiatives. Christof Koch, Ph.D., joined the Allen Institute from Caltech in 2011 as chief scientific officer. R. Clay Reid, M.D., Ph.D., from Harvard Medical School and Ricardo Dolmetsch, Ph.D., from Stanford University will start in the coming months.

They join the Allen Institute's senior scientific director of research and development, Hongkui Zeng, Ph.D., who oversees the Allen Mouse Brain Connectivity Atlas project and is already using the Allen Institute's existing public data sets to begin classifying different cell populations. Dr. Reid and Dr. Dolmetsch will contribute their respective expertise in neural coding and cell networks to a multidisciplinary conversation with Dr. Zeng and Dr. Koch, who is well known for integrating results from different neuroscientific disciplines to understand the complex computations and functions of the brain.

"The Allen Institute's groundbreaking approachthe way that it conducts 'big science' in an 'open science' fashionhas been a game changer in neuroscience," said Susumu Tonegawa, Ph.D., Nobel Laureate and director of the RIKEN-MIT Center for Neural Circuit Genetics. "From the accomplishment of the mouse and human brain atlases to this new work in the areas of neural coding and cell circuitry, the Allen Institute is making it possible for the world's scientists to carve inroads in understanding and treating human brain impairments that otherwise would be decades away."

Paul Allen launched the Allen Institute for Brain Science with a seed contribution of $100 million, and based on the successful completion and impact of the Allen Mouse Brain Atlas and other early initiatives, has since contributed an additional $100 million. The $300 million commitment announced today brings Allen's cumulative investment to $500 million, making it one of the largest philanthropic commitments ever to fund neuroscience research.

Bolstered by new funding and new scientific talent, the Allen Institute for Brain Science is further pushing the frontiers of neuroscience with new initiatives and historic aims to accelerate understanding of the human brain in health and disease.

Impact

The Allen Institute's work is used regularly by scientists around the world and has been recognized for its significant impact on brain research, garnering awards from the Society for Neuroscience, the American Academy of Neurology, Time magazine and others. A pioneer in bringing the "big science" approach to the study of the brain, the Allen Institute has been driving research forward since 2003 by systematically generating massive data setscomprising a total of 1.3 petabytes to dateand translating them into online public resources. These resources, all openly available via the Allen Brain Atlas data portal at www.brain-map.org free of charge, have become essential resources for scientists around the globefrom graduate students to large-scale commercial labs.

All together, the Allen Institute's online public resources receive approximately 50,000 visits each month, representing researchers from universities, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, government laboratories and other research organizations across about 70 countries worldwide. These unprecedented data stores and online tools empower scientists to save timeshaving days to months to years off of their research programsand to make groundbreaking discoveries about brain disease and disorders, helping to ultimately deliver better treatment options sooner. Researchers studying every facet of normal brain function and disease, from learning, cognition, hearing and development to stroke, Alzheimer's, obesity, schizophrenia, autism, and more, regularly use and cite Allen Institute resources in their research.

iPad review (2012)

What's in a name? Or, more importantly, what's in a digit? Would that which we call an iPad by any number less than 2 be less sweet? That's the question Apple posed for us indirectly when it unveiled the new iPad and relegated its future slates (and, presumably, phones) to a numeral-free future. And that new slate? It's much the same as the old one, with a slightly more chipper processor at its (quad) core and support for both Verizon and AT&T's fancy new LTE networks.

But there's one bigger change here, one that will ripple across the industry as each manufacturer struggles to keep up in this ever-accelerating market. That feature is the iPad's new 2048 x 1536 Retina display. It's the best display ever featured on a tablet, probably the best display ever on a mobile device, but is that enough to keep this tablet ahead of the pack? Believe it or not, the answer is yes.

Hardest working coach in the tourney? Maybe Izzo

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) ? Tom Izzo put his head back and his feet up, crossing his left ankle over his right leg on the corner of an airplane seat where his young son was sitting.

Almost instantly, the man who has guided Michigan State to six Final Fours was sound asleep ? mouth agape. The private plane had yet to even take off.

When you're a guy like Izzo, you take a few winks when and where you can.

Those who know the Spartans coach say that, far from slowing down as the victories have piled up ? from the national championship in 2000 to a string of Final Four appearances and Big Ten titles ? he's only driven himself harder.

His mission on this particular evening in mid-February, during a grueling five-games-in-13-days stretch ? when NCAA rules wouldn't permit him to say more than hello to prospects ? took him about 370 miles by air and road just to see two recruits and be seen by them as they played a high school game in Chicago. Izzo allowed an Associated Press reporter to go along for the trip.

"The more success he has had, the harder he has worked," said Indiana coach Tom Crean, who was an Izzo assistant from 1995-99. "After working with him early on as a head coach, I wouldn't have thought that was possible."

As Izzo prepares for his 15th straight NCAA tournament ? the top-seeded Spartans play Long Island University-Brooklyn on Friday in Columbus, Ohio ? he's on the job more than ever.

"I think I'm so paranoid about being one of those people who they say, 'He got satisfied,'" Izzo said Monday. "I vowed that wouldn't happen to me and the day it does, I'm walking off."

Part of staying hungry means, despite his stellar resume and $3.49 million in annual compensation, the 57-year-old Izzo makes a point of being accessible.

One of his longtime secretaries, Beth Marinez, jokes about how many "F-O-Ts" ? friend of Tom's ? there are, especially this time of year when his countless number of acquaintances are calling for tickets. At Izzo's weekly news conference, he usually spends an hour answering questions, a long time in college athletics these days.

Izzo has told people who have known him for decades to say something if he ever changes. So far, so good on that front.

Something people in the game are saying about Izzo this year, however, is that he has turned in one of his best coaching performances ever.

Michigan State started the season unranked, and justifiably so because just two of its top seven scorers returned from last year. Then the season started with losses on an aircraft carrier in San Diego against North Carolina and in New York City against Duke.

It's gotten better ever since. The Spartans went on to share the Big Ten title with Ohio State and Michigan, win the conference tournament after losing standout freshman Branden Dawson and earn a No. 1 seed in the West region.

Now, Izzo is riding a burst of energy.

"March has been good to me," he said. "I love March."

And with good reason. His 35-13 record in the NCAAs gives him a .729 winning percentage. That rate of success trails just Duke's Mike Krzyzewski (.775), North Carolina's Roy Williams (.753) and Connecticut's Jim Calhoun (.731) among active coaches with at least 40 tournament games.

Michigan State's streak of consecutive NCAA tournaments trails just two active streaks, by Kanas and Duke, and matches Bob Knight's run from 1986-2000 at Indiana for the longest in Big Ten history.

"I think he belongs in the Hall of Fame," said former Purdue coach Gene Keady, whose six career Big Ten titles were surpassed by Izzo's seventh this season. "If you lost a player to him in recruiting, you felt like you got outworked. If you lost a game to him, you felt like you got outcoached. He's fantastic."

Izzo is totally focused on the tournament now, but he has to keep an eye on the future to find the next star, which brings us back to his recent quick recruiting trip to Chicago.

The day after a victory over Wisconsin and about an hour following practice the next day, Izzo, his 11-year-old son Steven Mateen, and assistant coach Dwayne Stephens boarded a King Air 200 turboprop with nine leather seats ? including those for the pilot and co-pilot ? on a slick tarmac under a foggy sky at dusk.

"He doesn't get a lot of sleep during the season and doesn't look good toward the end of the year," said former Michigan State coach Jud Heathcote, who hired Izzo as a part-time assistant in 1983. "My wife will say, 'Tom doesn't look good.' And I'll say, 'Yeah, because he's worn out.' But Tom has never been able to rest. I used to tell him to get away and take some time off, but after a couple days at his house on Lake Michigan, he'll be back in the office working because he has a restless nature."

Nonetheless, Izzo was sleeping seconds after taking his seat in the back right section of the cabin and didn't wake up until the charter plane hit a pocket of turbulence toward the end of the 41-minute flight.

"Wow, I needed that power nap," Izzo said.

During the descent to Gary, Ind., into a setting sun over Lake Michigan, Izzo said recruiting is the hardest part of his job and the most essential.

Izzo doesn't think recruits are given cars or bags of money dropped off at their houses, like he used to hear about, but laments the belief that some schools use unregistered phones to circumvent NCAA rules to connect with prospects or find ways to get them to campus for unofficial visits that are supposed to be paid for by their families.

"It doesn't seem as bad as it was 10 years ago, even though in some ways I think there is more going on because we're making more money and it makes it even more critical to get recruits," Izzo said. "There's risk and reward. Yeah, you can get caught, but there's the reward of making more money and getting better jobs."

Once on the ground in Gary, a rental car was waiting at the terminal for Stephens to drive to a Chicago arena. Izzo decided to head to northwest Indiana, instead of Chicago, to avoid dealing with rush-hour traffic. That plan hit a snag when it took 13 minutes to creep a half-mile to a toll booth. Along the way, people in a car with a Michigan State "S'' on the plate honked and waved when they saw Izzo on the Chicago Skyway.

That was the first of a slew of times Izzo was recognized over the next two hours.

As he walked through the arena's parking lot and into the building, some shouted, "Hey coach!" while others stared, smiled and pointed.

After he was escorted to courtside seats, a stream of people ? including Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, DePaul coach Oliver Purnell, ex-DePaul coach Joey Meyer, Boston Celtics guard E'Twaun Moore and strangers ? came by say hello, wish him well and pose for pictures. If Izzo was still weary, he didn't show it.

"You're big-time, you don't even have voicemail," Meyer said.

"No, that makes me smart," Izzo replied with a smile. "And, I still have a flip phone ? that's how big time I am!"

Izzo made eye contact with the recruits, both of whom nodded their heads as if to say hello without saying a word, during pregame warm-ups in non-verbal exchanges that abided by the NCAA's strict rules during evaluation periods.

Mission accomplished. The trip that took just under 6 hours was worth it.

"Them knowing that you were there is the biggest thing you want to do," Izzo said on the flight back to Lansing. "You never know what will make a difference."

Apple's second slide-to-unlock case against Samsung stayed in Germany

Nothing like a little drama in the ongoing never-ending saga between Samsung and Apple to spice up your Friday morning, eh? As legions of consumers are cashing in a vacation day in order to pick up one of Apple's newest iPads, a court in Mannheim, Germany has stayed Apple's second slide-to-unlock case. According to FOSS Patents, the decision was made for the "duration of a parallel proceeding before the German Patent and Trademark Office that could lead to the revocation, in whole or in part, of Apple's slide-to-unlock utility model." Purportedly, the judge said that the court was not convinced of the "validity of that intellectual property right in all respects, with particular concern about the broadest group of claims." Lawyers who'd love to do nothing more than read about things related to their profession can tap that source link; everyone else can resume their best efforts of trying to be Woz when they grow up.
