Microsoft Finally Shipping Surface RT to Other Retailers?

December 7, 2012

Looks like Microsoft is through coddling?the Surface as reports are coming in that Microsoft may begin to ship the Surface RT to other retail stores as soon as ?a few days?. Until now, the tablet has only been available at Microsoft stores and online.

It seems that retailers over seas will be seeing the first shipments of the device and US shops might be getting it early January 2013 alongside the debut of the Surface Pro.

It is always a good thing to open the channels and have more folks trying to sell your stuff. Being able to sell your product online is great but most people still like to get a feel for the product before they purchase it and Microsoft Stores are still very few and far between. I really hope Microsoft pushes the envelope even further and delivers the Surface to US retailers by the end of this month. It would be great to have it on sale in more places as folks run through?random shops?trying to get the perfect gift at the last minute.

NBA schedule: Pistons to face divisional rivals Chicago, Cleveland over weekend

Lawrence Frank's Pistons aim to keep their hot shooting touch alive this weekend against two Central Division opponents.

With a respectable 6-6 record over their last 12 games, the Detroit Pistons will attempt to keep their improved level of play going strong this weekend with a pair of games against divisional opponents.

The Pistons will first welcome Tom Thibodeau's Chicago Bulls to The Palace of Auburn Hills on Friday evening for the first meeting of the season between the two organizations. Despite being one of the most talented teams in the Eastern Conference, the Bulls have struggled with consistency issues early on without the services of injured point guard Derrick Rose. Hoping to knock the Bulls to an even .500 record with a victory, the Pistons were dropped in all four appearances against Chicago last season.

Following Friday's game, the Pistons will then hit the road for a showdown with the Cleveland Cavalaiers at Quicken Loans Arena the following night. Detroit fought off the Cavaliers for a much-needed home victory on Dec. 3, and split the season series with Cleveland last year, 2-2.

Pistons Weekend Schedule

Friday, Dec. 7 - vs. Chicago Bulls - 7:30 p.m. ET - FSN

Saturday, Dec. 8 - at Cleveland Cavaliers - 7:30 p.m. ET - FSN

Clinton revisits family legacy in riot-torn Belfast

Kevin Lamarque / Reuters

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton meets Friday with Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson, right, and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, left, at Stormont Castle in Belfast on Friday.

By NBC News and wire reports

Updated at 10:25 a.m. ET: BELFAST ??Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Friday condemned a wave of street violence in Northern Ireland, saying it showed the peace process she has long supported in the British province was not yet complete.

Making one of her last foreign trips in her current job, she visited a province transformed by the 1998 peace agreement that her husband Bill Clinton helped bring about in what was regarded as one of the greatest successes of his presidency.

But Northern Ireland remains riven by sectarian tensions and Clinton arrived in a week that has seen three riots, the seizure of a bomb over 62 miles outside Belfast, and the arrest of four militant nationalists.

The latest riot erupted Thursday night when a policeman was injured after protesters hurled missiles to vent their anger against nationalist councilors who voted to remove the British flag atop Belfast City Hall.

'It pains me': Clinton decries plight of women in male-dominated countries

Police said Friday that four men were arrested after a "viable bomb" was recovered from a car in a nationalist area of Derry overnight. A letter bomb was also found in a County Down postbox with the capacity "to kill or cause serious injury."

"It has been a sad reminder unfortunately that despite how hardy the peace has been, there are still those who not only would test it but try to destroy it," Clinton said.

"I really commend the leaders and citizens who have condemned the violence? and I join them in condemning it ? to remind us all that peace comes through dialogue and debate, not violence," she added.

Important for 2016?
However, Clinton's visit, during which politicians from both sides of the political divide briefed her on the peace process, was a reminder of the huge popularity of her family in Ireland, a potential asset in attracting the Irish-American vote if Clinton decided to run for the U.S. presidency in 2016.

The province has suffered one of the world's worst property market crashes and its leaders are hoping for the kind of U.S. foreign investment that has transformed the rest of Ireland.

"Our need is more economic now than political," said Reg Empey, Chairman of the Ulster Unionist Party, who was a senior figure in the peace process.

"But we also have to be aware that there is still a degree of volatility ... and in those circumstances I think we should make sure we keep the relationship going," he said.

Peace process
Hillary Clinton traveled to Northern Ireland several times in the mid-1990s while her husband helped broker the 1998 Good Friday peace accord. His hands-on approach was widely recognized as crucial at moments when the agreement looked like crumbling.

Bill Clinton's work helped win over the Irish vote during his re-election campaign in 1996 and his popularity among Irish-Americans could rub off on his wife if she needed it.

Clinton on Thursday told journalists in Dublin she was "too focused on what I'm doing" to think about a run for the presidency and declined to comment on U.S. newspaper reports that her husband may be appointed as Washington's next ambassador to the Republic of Ireland.

Personal ties
As first lady, Clinton lent support to pro-peace women's groups in Northern Ireland and visited people wounded in the 1998 Omagh bombing, the deadliest attack in three decades of violence commonly known as the "Troubles."

At least 3,600 people were killed during that time as Catholic nationalists seeking union with Ireland fought British security forces and mainly Protestant Loyalists determined to remain part of the United Kingdom.

"The lessons learned here in Ireland about how to build peace could be of great use to other peoples and nations," Clinton said Thursday in a speech in Dublin in which she recalled a meeting between Catholic and Protestant women in Belfast in the 1990s.

"There are so many more ties that bind us than divide us, and that is what has motivated me over many years now," she said.

When Hamas launches a rocket, Israeli iPhones buzz

Thanks to Color Red, a new app thought up by a 13-year-old, Israelis all over the country know exactly when and where each rocket from Gaza is headed.

Rockets launched by Palestinian militants towards Israel make their way from the central Gaza Strip, seen from the Israel Gaza border, Monday. Thanks to an app thought up by an Israeli teenager, Israelis all over the country know exactly when and where each rocket from Gaza is headed.

There was also a buzz from Mr. Genasia?s iPhone. A rocket had been fired from Gaza.

Thanks to Color Red, a new app thought up by a 13-year-old, Israelis all over the country know exactly when and where each rocket is headed.

The geeky solution for Israel?s more than 3 million residents threatened by rocket fire isn?t the first time Israel?s high-tech prowess has been applied to its security threats. In fact, much of Israel?s innovation economy ? which is considered second only to Silicon Valley ? is spurred by the demands of its military and related security industries.

Perhaps adversity whets Israel?s competitive edge, as suggested by the 2009 best-seller Start-Up Nation. According to Israeli press reports, the young teenager behind Color Red is from Beersheva, one of the cities that bears the brunt of Gaza rocket fire ? and thus pops up most frequently on the app.

You can choose to have all alerts sent to your phone, or just those for areas you select from a long list ? all in Hebrew. The system efficiently delivers its notifications based off the government's public warning alerts.

Depending on where Israelis live, they have between 15 and 90 seconds to reach a bomb shelter once the sirens begin to wail. Lately, the sirens have been followed by a large BOOM as Israel?s Iron Dome system kicks in.

Then, if you also have the app from daily newspaper Haaretz, you see an alert pop up while sipping your latte on the Mediterranean coast: Iron Dome intercepts rocket over Tel Aviv.

Apps may not blunt the rockets, but it?s nice to know where they?re falling ??and where they?re not.

Starbucks promises to pay more UK tax

(AP) ? Starbucks bowed to mounting pressure over its tax affairs in Britain and revealed Thursday that it would pay about 10 million pounds ($16 million) in each of the next two years.

Having been slammed by the country's lawmakers of "immorally" avoiding tax, Starbucks' U.K. managing director Kris Engskov said the firm had agreed to pay more than required by law.

"With the backdrop of these difficult times, in the area of tax, our customers clearly expect us to do more," he told the London Chamber of Commerce.

The Seattle-based coffee company has 700 British outlets, but has paid just 8.6 million pounds in corporation tax in 14 years. Starbucks says this is due to a process involving paying royalties to its European headquarters in the Netherlands.

The company hasn't done anything illegal. Companies operating in Europe can base themselves in any of the 27 European Union nations, allowing them to take advantage of a particular country's low tax rates.

Earlier this week, Parliament's Public Accounts Committee criticized multinationals such as Starbucks, Amazon and Google for "using the letter of tax laws both nationally and internationally to immorally minimize their tax obligations."

Starbucks, which also has been the target of demonstrations by the protest group U.K. Uncut, announced this week that it was reviewing its tax approach.

Engskov said the company was proposing "to pay a significant amount of corporation tax during 2013 and 2014 regardless of whether our company is profitable during these years."

He estimated that would amount to "somewhere in the range of 10 million pounds in each of the next two years."

Labour lawmaker Margaret Hodge, who chaired the parliamentary committee, said Starbucks' change of heart was proof that "people power works."
